San Angelo Pediatric Inpatient Unit

Compassionate Care For Children

We go above and beyond to make your child's stay the best it can be. Child-friendly murals, an aquarium, and 16 spacious rooms are here to make you and your child more comfortable. Twelve of our 16 rooms are equipped with cardiac monitors if your child needs to be monitored more closely. Our specially trained physicians, nurses, and staff are here because they love children, and it shows. Our nurses are certified in PALS (pediatric advanced life support) and NRP (neonatal resuscitation program), among other certifications. They also participate in continuing education monthly to give the best care possible to you and your family.

Admissions

Upon admission to the pediatric unit, your child will be weighed and measured and have vital signs taken, which includes checking a pulse rate, blood pressure, temperature, respirations, and oxygen saturation. These are generally taken on a regular schedule during your child's stay, as ordered by your physician. Intravenous access for medication administration, blood tests and x–rays may be included in your child's plan of care. While these tests are common during a hospital stay, your physician may request other tests necessary to monitor your child's progress.

Visiting Hours

Visiting hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

For your child's safety, our unit is locked 24/7. We request that an adult stay with the patient at all times. Parents will have access to a window bed in all rooms, and a couch with a pull-out bed is available in some rooms.

Siblings are allowed to visit, depending on your child's illness. However, for their own safety, we ask that they leave when visiting hours are over so the patient can rest well and the staff can have room to work, especially in an emergency situation.

Our kitchen is stocked with snacks and goodies for the patient to enjoy in accordance with what the physician orders. Our food and nutrition staff do their best to have other pediatric meal options available to our little ones. Just let your nurse know if you have a picky eater!

Confidentiality

The health team members will keep you updated on your child's condition throughout your stay. Patient confidentiality rules do not allow us to share information about other patients. The care and well-being of your child is of utmost importance, and we want to make it the best experience possible.

Outpatient Clinic

Because of Children's Miracle Network, we have an outpatient clinic where children receive special treatments without having to travel to out-of-town facilities. We provide individual treatment as needed for children, including weekly treatments for some, as well as chemotherapy treatment administered by our chemo-trained nurses.

Kid Stuff

Here at Shannon, we are all about children. We have a playroom with toys, games, books, puzzles, and a foosball table for your child to enjoy when his or her condition improves. A colorful outside courtyard with a unique fountain and play features is available for fresh air during your stay. We also offer Firesticks with access to Disney Plus in all of our rooms as well as a portable gaming device loaded with kid-friendly games that kids can play right from their beds.

Security Policy for Shannon Women's & Children's Hospital

At Shannon, the safety of each of our patients is extremely important. We want you to rest and recover in an environment that you can trust is safe and secure.

General visiting hours for the hospital are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., but we realize visitors may come to visit outside of those hours. You may welcome visitors as you see fit.

To ensure the safety of your newborn, your other children, and yourself, the following security measures will be in place during your hospital stay:

  • Each of the units in the Shannon Women’s & Children’s Hospital will be locked 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • The main entrances of the Women’s & Children’s Hospital will locked down from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., seven days a week.
  • Each family will receive the opportunity to have two family members banded with identification bracelets for security purposes. These arm bands allow access to the building and to your designated unit. The family members wearing the arm bands can escort their visitors to and from the unit as needed.
  • We encourage you to inform your potential visitors to contact you before they plan to visit so you can expect their arrival.
  • Visitors will have access to the lobby and waiting rooms on each floor. There is a phone available on the first floor near the vending area if an unexpected visitor needs to call and ask about visiting you or your family.
  • Our infant security system will continue to be utilized to further monitor newborns and infants in the building.
