Shannon Medical Center is designated as a Level III Lead Trauma Facility by the Texas Department of Health. This means we have the experienced personnel and necessary facilities to provide resuscitation, stabilization, assessment and treatment for critically ill and injured trauma patients in the region. It also means we demonstrate consistent compliance with recognized standards of care for trauma patients.
At Shannon, we have emergency department physicians on staff at the hospital 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Shannon is the only Level III hospital in the entire region that has trauma surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, urologist, facial surgeons and heart surgeons on call and available at all times. Along with these physicians, Shannon's trauma services team pulls expertise from many clinical services to ensure the best possible outcome for the trauma patient. From Shannon Airmed1 to diagnostic radiology, specially trained trauma nurses in the emergency department, highly skilled trauma surgeons, and rehabilitation staff, Shannon Medical Center's Trauma facility provides excellent care to San Angelo and the surrounding communities in the Concho Valley.
Shannon's trauma department treats patients with traumas including car, ATV and motorcycle wrecks, assaults, gunshot wounds, stab wounds, falls, pediatric emergencies, burns and many other patient problems.
After receiving emergency care, patients are transferred to the Trauma Unit. The unit, which recently expanded from eight to 17 beds, serves as a step-down for patients throughout the hospital age 12 and up. The 24/7 Trauma Unit care team consists of trauma surgeons, nurses, case managers, dietitians, and a chaplain.
