Volunteers
Shannon Volunteers (formerly the Shannon Auxiliary) was founded in 1975 to benefit Shannon Medical Center and the community. Hundreds of men and women have given their time and talent to the hospital since then. Shannon Volunteers provide service and comfort to patients and their families and work to make each patient's stay a little easier.
A wide range of opportunities are available for Shannon Volunteers.
Greet Visitors and Patients
Helpful volunteers staff the hospital reception desks to provide information to visitors and arriving patients. Reception volunteers also provide escort services as needed, deliver mail and flowers to patient rooms, and offer directions to hospital visitors.
Staff the Gift Shop
Our gift shops provide patients, guests and hospital personnel with gift items, magazines and snacks. Volunteers staff the gift shops and donate the proceeds to Shannon Medical Center.
Comfort Families
Volunteers make an important contribution to patients' friends and families in the ICU and same-day surgery waiting rooms. Volunteers serve as liaisons between the ICU nursing staff and those who are waiting to visit a patient in ICU. In the same-day surgery waiting room, volunteers provide the link between the family and the patient during surgery and recovery.
Visit Patients
Volunteers visit patients throughout the hospital who may not have family in the area. It takes only a few moments to brighten someone's day through an encouraging conversation, reading from a favorite book or magazine, getting personal items from the gift shops, or helping the patient write a note to family or friends.
Manage the Magazine and Book Cart
Volunteers also maintain magazine and book carts, and deliver to waiting room areas and to patient rooms upon request.
