Shannon Named Robotic Center of Excellence

Shannon Medical Center recently achieved accreditation from Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) as a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery. This accreditation recognizes Shannon’s commitment and high standard of delivery of quality patient care and safety. Shannon is one of 10 facilities in Texas and among 123 in the nation to receive this honor.

Status as an accredited Robotic Center of Excellence means that Shannon has met nationally and internationally recognized standards. Not all hospitals and surgeons seek accreditation; not all that undergo the rigorous inspection process are granted accreditation.

“Our surgical specialists at Shannon are committed to providing exceptional outcomes for our patients,” said Michael K. Boyd, MD, General Surgeon. “Our team has completed more than 8,000 total procedures using the da Vinci robotic-assisted surgical system. This accreditation helps assure our patients can expect safer procedures, exceptional care before, during and after surgery, fewer complications and a better overall surgical experience. Along with our 14 surgeons, the work of our entire robotic team within the OR ensures our patients receive this high-quality standard of care.”

Healthcare facilities and surgeons seeking SRC accreditation undergo an extensive assessment and inspection process to ensure the applicant meets SRC’s proven standards and requirements. These requirements include surgical volumes, facility equipment, clinical pathways and standardized operating procedures, an emphasis on patient education and continuous quality assessment. Inspectors educate staff in accredited departments on best practices to help an organization improve its care and services.

“Our surgeons began utilizing the da Vinci robotic surgery system in 2016, and it is widely utilized by 14 surgeons in general surgery, gynecology and urology procedures,” said Gregory Dunham, MD, OB/GYN. “We now have five robotic systems in our operating rooms and look forward to further expansion of this program and procedures so patients receive the same standard and options for care here locally that they would find in a larger city.”

“We’re proud to recognize Shannon Medical Center for its commitment to advancing and providing quality care

for all patients,” said Gary M. Pratt, CEO of SRC. “This accreditation signals that this facility is among the best in this specialty and is dedicated to delivering the highest level of care possible.”
