Breast Cancer Care in San Angelo
Breast cancer affects hundreds of thousands of families every year. Typically, breast cancer occurs in middle-aged and older women. At Shannon, we offer comprehensive breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, and recovery services to patients in San Angelo and the surrounding areas. Our oncology center pairs innovative, cutting-edge technologies and methods with personalized care, delivered by a multidisciplinary team of specialists.
Breast Cancer Screenings
The earlier breast cancer is detected, the more treatable it is. Because breast cancer is often asymptomatic, it makes having regular screenings an important tool in early detection.
Risk factors for developing breast cancer may include:
- A family history of breast cancer
- A personal history of breast cancer or benign breast disease
- Dense breast tissue
- Inherited changes in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes
- Obesity
- Older age
- Taking hormones like estrogen in combination with progestin
- Radiation exposure
- Beginning your period before age 12
Depending on your age and level of risk, your primary care physician or OBGYN might work with you to develop a breast cancer screening routine. Our Shannon Women’s Imaging Center can provide annual mammograms in a private, comfortable setting. Additionally, your physician will share how to perform self-inspections, so you can track any potential changes. If breast cancer is suspected, our oncology team will recommend a biopsy to determine the type and extent.
San Angelo Breast Cancer Treatments
At Shannon, we take pride in our state-of-the-art treatment methods for breast cancer care. Our radiation therapies include Image Guided Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IGRT-IMRT), stereotactic radiation therapy, and Respiratory Gating and Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH). Additionally, we utilize robotic-assisted surgery techniques to ensure minimally invasive options whenever possible.
Our oncology team will customize your treatment and depending on the stage of cancer you are dealing with, we might combine treatments, including chemotherapy and hormonal therapy options. All of our treatments are performed by our trusted specialists, including board-certified medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgeons, and specialized certified oncology nurses.
